Bohemian Grove presents : Chicago Skyway : 18/02/12

•January 15, 2012 • 1 Comment

A night for automatic lovers of deep, electronic music from the outer reaches of Chicago house music and Detroit techno, to the deepest sounds of Berlin and everything in between. Featuring a blend of DJ sets and live performance with a real emphasis on the underground.

Since starting out in late 2010 we have thrown nine parties, playing host to the likes of Underground Quality label boss DJ Jus-Ed, Detroit heavyweight Mike Huckaby, Three Chairs luminary Marcellus Pittman, New York’s wonder boy Levon Vincent, Modern Love stalwarts Andy Stott & Claro Intelecto, Londons Jane Fitz of Peg party fame, Atmospheric Existence head and all round nice guy Miles Sagnia, Munich based Roberto Q. Ingram and of course some of our local friends have guested, namely Mindyourhead Recordings boss Grimes Adhesif, Leon Mitternacht and Juniper’s Dan Mumberson.

In amongst stellar performances from all of the above, the resident DJ’s Johnny, Rick and Damo have unarguably defined the sound of Bohemian Grove, building up a very loyal following along the way.

We rounded off 2011 by hosting the main club space for a three room event in collaboration with the lovely guys at Islington Mill. A fabulous party for sure and the perfect way to end what has been a memorable year of events.

We move forward into 2012 with a string of very exciting bookings already penned into the Bohemian Grove diary.

The first of which comes in the shape of Chicago native Sean Hernandez AKA Chicago Skyway….

Sean grew up on Chicago’s North Side to a perfect storm of musical influences: While his father was a rock/punk musician, his mother loved disco and throughout the neighborhood, Puerto Rican music played around the clock.
As he grew older, Sean was electrified by the legendary WBMX radio mixes, which were cultivating an entire generation of Chicago DJs, producers and dance music fans. It wasn’t long before he found his way to fabled nightclub Medusa’s and signed his name on the dotted line.
Obsessed with the house sound, Sean studied how it was made, first buying turntables, then a TR-909 drum machine, then skipping meals in order to buy more gear. He recalls spending hours attempting to recreate Ron Trent’s Altered States, Larry Heard’s Beyond the Clouds and Adonis’s No Way Back, trying to figure out “what made these songs funk.”
He quickly became a regular fixture on the DJ scene, blending deep house with disco and Detroit techno. In the mid-‘90s, he organized the hugely popular night Kream. Cajmere appeared frequently, often debuting the latest Relief Records releases, along with Gene Farris and Spencer Kinsey (aka – Gemini). In the late ‘90s, Sean formed the crew Krush Productions to revitalize the underground scene with a slew of well-received events.

He has since retired from event promotion in favour of producing tracks under the name Chicago Skyway. In 2009, he released two albums including Bells on Eargasmic Recordings and Heavens on M>O>S Recordings. More recently the Lager EP on M>O>S and his Londinium EP on Uzuri have been causing quite a stir.
Add to that his set at last years Freerotation festival being one of the weekends highlights and a top notch podcast for the guys at Little White Earbuds it’s easy to see that 2011 was a great year for Sean.

This party has been in the pipeline for over 6 months now and it’s definitely safe to say that we’re more than a little excited about it finally coming into fruition.

Line up : Chicago Skyway, Rick Nicholls, Johnny Abstract, Damo B

Bohemian Grove is all about hearing good electronic music in friendly, comfortable surroundings with like minded people.
As you will know by now, we like to keep our parties intimate to ensure that the atmosphere is never compromised. Unfortunately we have had to turn people away at previous events but rest assured we have no plans to move to any of the city’s bigger venues.

Islington Mill, James Street, Salford. 10pm – 6am… £10… Don’t sleep on it !

Tickets available online at http://www.residentadvisor.net and at Piccadilly Records & Eastern Bloc, Oldham Street, Manchester city centre…. Peace !

Miles Sagnia – Elevation – Bohemian Grove Podcast

A raw glimpse of my collection, mixed and baked spontaneously for Bohemian Grove, a promotional organisation and collective with it’s finger on the pulse of the beating heart of the Manchester underground… I am excited and looking forward to performing for them on September 3rd, along with Jane Fitz and their residents…

This mix is raw and uncut, nothing polished and made “perfect” via the ease of software… Just a vinyl ride with a lot of records that have served me well over the years, a no frills improvised journey, just letting the mind will the fingers to let the sixth sense do the searching…. Hope you enjoy the flavours and for those of you who can make it to Bohemian Grove’s first birthday, see you on the dancefloor!

Bohemian Grove 1st Birthday : event update

•August 18, 2011 • Leave a Comment

To everybody whom this may concern, it is with deepest regret that we make the following statement…
Due to circumstances way beyond our control, Vakula will not be joining us for our birthday event on 3rd September. Although we have already done our bit and acquired a certificate of sponsorship/work permit for him, the British embassy in the Ukraine have just informed us that they are unable to grant him a visa to enter the UK in time for the forthcoming event. Obviously we are extremely disappointed about this, as is Vakula. On a lighter note, we will still be giving him his UK debut here in Manchester once the embassy are able to grant him a visa which will be in the not so distant future.
We have spent the last 24 hours putting ‘plan B’ into action and are satisfied that we have a more than worthy replacement in the shape of Miles Sagnia.
Amongst releasing music on Keith Worthys ‘Aesthetic Audio’ and Kirk Degiorgios ‘Applied Rhythmic Technology’, Miles also heads up his own ‘Atmospheric Existence Recordings’.
Miles has been on our radar for quite a while now and was already pencilled in as one of our forthcoming bookings. Fortunately for us he happened to be free on 3rd September and we jumped at the chance of taking something positive from a bad situation and bringing that booking forward.
We will still be partying through until 8am and hope everybody would still like to join us to celebrate a year of Bohemian Grove.
Ticket price will be reduced back to the usual £10. For everybody who has already purchased tickets online at Resident Advisor, we have your names on a list and will refund the difference upon your arrival at Islington Mill.
More info to follow shortly

Hiding to nothing – Jane Fitz – Bohemian Grove podcast

Londons Jane Fitz provides us with 90 minutes of raw underground house music ahead of her performance at the Bohemian Grove all night party next month. The mix covers a lot of ground. It is undeniably house… but with a continual nod towards techno. Her mix is very modern sounding but there are persistent echoes of classic Chicago and Detroit music and the dubby sounds of Berlin. Authentic deep house music with a dark edge that maintains a constant feeling of warmth and soul. Tip !
