Bohemian Grove presents : Chicago Skyway : 18/02/12

•January 15, 2012 • 1 Comment

A night for automatic lovers of deep, electronic music from the outer reaches of Chicago house music and Detroit techno, to the deepest sounds of Berlin and everything in between. Featuring a blend of DJ sets and live performance with a real emphasis on the underground.

Since starting out in late 2010 we have thrown nine parties, playing host to the likes of Underground Quality label boss DJ Jus-Ed, Detroit heavyweight Mike Huckaby, Three Chairs luminary Marcellus Pittman, New York’s wonder boy Levon Vincent, Modern Love stalwarts Andy Stott & Claro Intelecto, Londons Jane Fitz of Peg party fame, Atmospheric Existence head and all round nice guy Miles Sagnia, Munich based Roberto Q. Ingram and of course some of our local friends have guested, namely Mindyourhead Recordings boss Grimes Adhesif, Leon Mitternacht and Juniper’s Dan Mumberson.

In amongst stellar performances from all of the above, the resident DJ’s Johnny, Rick and Damo have unarguably defined the sound of Bohemian Grove, building up a very loyal following along the way.

We rounded off 2011 by hosting the main club space for a three room event in collaboration with the lovely guys at Islington Mill. A fabulous party for sure and the perfect way to end what has been a memorable year of events.

We move forward into 2012 with a string of very exciting bookings already penned into the Bohemian Grove diary.

The first of which comes in the shape of Chicago native Sean Hernandez AKA Chicago Skyway….

Sean grew up on Chicago’s North Side to a perfect storm of musical influences: While his father was a rock/punk musician, his mother loved disco and throughout the neighborhood, Puerto Rican music played around the clock.
As he grew older, Sean was electrified by the legendary WBMX radio mixes, which were cultivating an entire generation of Chicago DJs, producers and dance music fans. It wasn’t long before he found his way to fabled nightclub Medusa’s and signed his name on the dotted line.
Obsessed with the house sound, Sean studied how it was made, first buying turntables, then a TR-909 drum machine, then skipping meals in order to buy more gear. He recalls spending hours attempting to recreate Ron Trent’s Altered States, Larry Heard’s Beyond the Clouds and Adonis’s No Way Back, trying to figure out “what made these songs funk.”
He quickly became a regular fixture on the DJ scene, blending deep house with disco and Detroit techno. In the mid-‘90s, he organized the hugely popular night Kream. Cajmere appeared frequently, often debuting the latest Relief Records releases, along with Gene Farris and Spencer Kinsey (aka – Gemini). In the late ‘90s, Sean formed the crew Krush Productions to revitalize the underground scene with a slew of well-received events.

He has since retired from event promotion in favour of producing tracks under the name Chicago Skyway. In 2009, he released two albums including Bells on Eargasmic Recordings and Heavens on M>O>S Recordings. More recently the Lager EP on M>O>S and his Londinium EP on Uzuri have been causing quite a stir.
Add to that his set at last years Freerotation festival being one of the weekends highlights and a top notch podcast for the guys at Little White Earbuds it’s easy to see that 2011 was a great year for Sean.

This party has been in the pipeline for over 6 months now and it’s definitely safe to say that we’re more than a little excited about it finally coming into fruition.
